Leona Rhees

PLEASANT VIEW - Leona Holmes Rhees died Saturday, January 8, 2005 at the home of her daughter. She was born in Ogden, Utah, September 19, 1904 to Lamoni and Alta Mae Holmes. She was reared in North Ogden by her grandparents Bishop James and Frances C. Ward, due to her mother's untimely death. She graduated from Weber Academy.

On November 1, 1923 she married Leland W. Rhees in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He passed away January 17, 1990. She worked for Weber County Schools and Bon Marche as Art and Needlework Director for many years. She continued to help many with their knitting in her home until her death. She knitted and crocheted over 100 afghans during her later years for gifts to many.

Leona was active in the Daughters of Utah Pioneers in her earlier years. She was a lifelong resident of Weber County and a member of the Pleasant View First Ward at the time of her death. She was active in her church her entire life, serving in many organizations in leadership capacities. She became a scribe at age 13 to her grandfather (then a patriarch) writing several hundred patriarchal blessings for patrons. She served as a receptionist at the Ogden Temple for eight years when it first opened.

She celebrated her 100th birthday at Maddox on September 19, 2004 with 88 descendants attending. She was vibrant and alert at an open house on September 20, 2004 greeting over 200 guests. She was the Grand Marshall of Pleasant View City's Founders Day parade in June 2004. She was most optimistic and had a great sense of humor, always keeping positive about life and it's trials.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son Jay H. Rhees, and a daughter Alta.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Connie W. Rhees; son, Roland J. and Vernice Rhees, Mesa, AZ; and daughter, Marilyn R. and Harry E. Woodbury, Ogden. She is also survived by one halfsister Agnes Berrett of Ogden, Utah. She has 13 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the LDS Humanitarian or Perpetual Education Fund.
