Leonard A. West

ROY--On Friday, August 30,2002, Leonard West died after nearly a year of coping with esophageal cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Joyce West, and their three sons, Bill, Paul, and Jim. Leonard had resided for the past 44 years in Roy, Utah.

Leonard was born in Leadville, Colorado and moved in his teenage years to Tooele, Utah. It was there that he met Joyce. Leonard enlisted in the Army Air Force and became a pilot instructor. He wedded Joyce while in the service. After the war, Leonard completed his college education at the University of Utah, earning a degree in civil engineering.

Leonard devoted most of his career to engineering. He worked for two years for Combined Metals in Pioche, Nevada. Returning to Utah, Leonard worked for Ajax Incorporated in Tooele, becoming the plant manager. Opportunity presented itself again in 1958; Leonard became the manager of plant engineering for the Marquardt Corporation in Ogden, Utah. It was during this employment that his family moved to Ogden, then soon, to Roy. In 1962, Leonard went to work for Torkelson Engineering in Salt Lake City; this company later became part of the Pullman Corporation. In 1980, Leonard became the construction manager for the Ford, Bacon, and Davis Incorporated in Salt Lake City. Leonard retired from F.B.&D. Inc. in 1987. After this, Leonard occasionally worked for a lifelong friend, Virgil Anderson, of Anderson Engineering.

His family will cherish the memory of his humor and bright smile, and made-up names.
