Llewellyn (Lew) Haws Thomas Obituary (1929 - 2017)

LLEWELLYN (LEW) HAWS THOMAS November 8, 1929 - April 30, 2017 Lew H. Thomas, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather left to join his beloved wife, son and daughter in Heaven on April 30, 2017. He was born in Malad, Idaho Nov. 8, 1929 to Guy Owens and Edna Olive Haws Thomas. He was the youngest of four children. He was raised on a dry farm in Malad, Idaho. His mother, whom he adored, passed away when Lew was 16. His father remarried and they moved to Brigham City. Lew graduated from Box Elder High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy, serving during the Korean War. His service was spent mostly in the Mediterranean. He met his eternal sweetheart, Ladine Pehrson, just prior to his enlistment. They courted and were engaged through mail and were married Oct. 27, 1951 in Brigham City. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. They spent 62 years together raising three children, working and serving others. He spent the majority of his life in Weber County, living in Ogden, North Ogden, Farr West and Roy. Lew spent his career in the Trucking business working for Consolidated Freight, Barton Truck Lines, and H & D Transfer doing short haul, dock supervisor and Terminal Manager. He was a hard and dedicated worker. Lew was a member of the LDS church and served as Ward Clerk, Sunday School Teacher and faithful Home Teacher. He was known for many years in his ward in Farr West as the "candy man" where he enjoyed handing out treats to the young children in the ward. He wasn't a big conversationalist but his sense of humor brought many laughs to all who associated with him. He was kind and thoughtful of others, spending many hours making "quarter pounders", "rock people" and "handy-dandy flashlights" to give to others, making them smile. He brought smiles and laughs to those he gave his handmade cards to. He loved to hunt, fish and camp. He shared these interests with his best friend, sidekick and son, Dave. He enjoyed doing yard work and going for rides through the mountains. After retirement, Lew worked part time at Gold's Gym in Roy where he earned the love and respect of the employees and patrons. He enjoyed traveling and camping with Ladine, his children and grandchildren. In 2015 Lew was pleased when he was invited to meet at the State Capitol where he was awarded the Ambassador for Peace Medal and Certificate by a representative of the Korean Consulate's office. He was proud to have received this honor. Lew is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Craig) Rogers of North Ogden, son-in-law Lynn (Cindy) Nielsen, daughter-in-law Karen N. Thomas; 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, with two more coming this year. He is also survived by one nephew, Brent L. Thomas and one niece, Janice T. Smith, both of Mount Lake Terrace, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, brothers Clayne H. and Guy O. Jr., his wife, son David Llewellyn and daughter LuAnn T. Nielsen. The family would like to thank Dr. Mikio Obayashi for his compassionate care of dad for many years. They would also like to thank Jacqui Ball and the staff at Seasons Assisted Living along with the staff at Comfort Worx Hospice for their tender care of dad during the final week of his life. Finally, thanks to the staff at the Roy Harmon's Pharmacy for their personal attention and friendliness. Dad loved teasing all of them and making them smile. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the Roy 4th Ward Building, 2100 W. 5300 So., with public viewings at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. from 6 to 8 pm Friday, May 5 and one hour prior to the funeral on Saturday at the church. Interment, Evergreen Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the General Missionary Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
