Loretta Pettigrew

–

Layton, Utah

Loretta Jones Pettigrew or as she was known to many as Lala, Grandma Lala, and Red.

She shared so much pride in being Dine/Navajo, it would not be right to not introduce her and where she came from as a Dine woman. Loretta was born into the Zuni people, for the Red Running into water. Her maternal grandfather was from the Mud Clan, and her paternal grandfather was from the Towering House People.

58, of Layton Utah, Loretta began her journey home to be with our Creator and loved ones on the morning of January 9th. Loretta passed peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by loved ones in the comfort of her own home.

Loretta was born on the Navajo Reservation in Shiprock, New Mexico on August 25, 1966 to her late parents Tony and Bessie Jones. It is on the Navajo Reservation in Hogback, New Mexico that Loretta resided until the age of 18. It was then at age 18 she moved to Ogden, Utah, to attend school at Ogden-Weber Technical School. It is here in Utah, that Loretta built a life with her husband the late Arnold Pettigrew, who she had met in Hogback, New Mexico. Arnold loved her so deeply, that he followed her out to Utah and they were married October 4, 1990 in Layton.

Loretta had three children, Zacch, Laurence and Bessie; and later on she gained her bonus daughter, Connie Pettigrew (wife to Zacch); two beautiful grandkids, Rei and Rue, who she adored so much. Loretta showed a lot of pride in her grandgirls, as well as her kids. Loretta worked for many years as a lunch aide/cook for a school. She loved her job, and the kids that she fed.

Loretta was a Godly woman, she loved the Lord all her days. It showed through her and the love that she had for those around her.

Loretta enjoyed spending time with her family, whether that be with her kids, grandkids or getting together with her family in New Mexico. She enjoyed hanging out with friends at church gatherings, playing cards or getting together to eat. Wherever she was, you knew you would be having a few laughs. Loretta had an adventurous soul. She will be remembered as her silly self, but also for her strong and independent personality.

Loretta is survived by her children, ; Zacch and his wife Connie, Laurence and Bessie; her two grandgirls, Rue and Rei; siblings, Norman (Mingo) Jones, Carol Howard, and Bill Jones; many nieces, nephews, and lots of grandnieces and grandnephews, who she considered as her own grandchildren. Loretta is preceded in death by her parents, Tony and Bessie; her late husband, Arnold Pettigrew; her sister, Rose; and brother, Frank; and a niece, Stacy.

A beloved mom, grandma, aunt, sister and friend to many. Loretta and her sweet, kind and joyous spirit will be deeply missed by so many. Although, we are sad and hurt by her passing, we find peace and comfort knowing she is in the most beautiful place free from all sickness and pain. In the words of Loretta, who never liked to say goodbye, but would often tell individuals “see you later.” As a family and friends to her, we will say “see you later” for we know that fateful day will come soon, when we are reunited with her again.
