Loyd Thomas Adamson Obituary (1920 - 2006)

BRIGHAM CITY - Loyd Thomas Adamson, 86, passed away Friday, September 8, 2006 at the Pioneer Care Center in Brigham City. He was born the son of Thomas and Grace Helen Isenhart Adamson. He was born in Ogden, Utah on 17 August 1920. He attended schools, graduating form the new Ogden High School in 1939. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He married Lucille Mildred Brown in Olympia, Washington in November 1942. From their marriage they had nine children. They later divorced. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1941 and assigned to the 115th Medical Battalion at San Luis Obispo, California. When President Franklin Delano Roosevelt announced a State of war between the U.S. Government and Japan on 9 December 1941 Loyd realized the military would need many pilots. He had always wanted to fly so he applied for schooling as a flying cadet. He received his call to the Cadet Corps in the spring of 1942 and so began his military career in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He completed pilot training in September 1943. His first overseas tour of duty was with the Antilles Air Command flying anti-submarine patrol. He then received training at Roswell, New Mexico in the B-17 Flying Fortress. His next overseas tour of duty was at Ridgewell, England where he and his crew flew 35 missions over Germany during WWII. His military career included commanding an "Arctic Survival School" at the Northeast Command at Goose Base, Labrador for three years. Following training in the KC-97 he was assigned to the 9th Air Refueling Squadron at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. He also spent a tour of duty at SAC Headquarters, Offutt AFB, Nebraska. In July 1958 he began flight training and ground school in the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker at Castle AFB, Merced, California, graduating on 30 September 1958. He then reported to the 42nd Bomb Wing, Loring AFB, Maine. On 31 May 1961 Major Loyd Thomas Adamson retired from the United States Air Force. Loyd and his family returned to Ogden, Utah where he was employed at Defense Depot Ogden. He retired from there in 1979. Loyd enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and many friends. He had a huge wanderlust and loved being out in Mother Nature, especially in the mountains. He was a rock hound and enjoyed making jewelry with the rocks. He volunteered at the Hill Aerospace Museum on Saturdays for 16 years. He enjoyed telling visitors about the B-17 which had a special place in his heart. He had flown many of the other airplanes on display in the Museum. He married Louise C. Boren in 1984. They lived in Brigham City, Utah and spent several years as snowbirds in Arizona and California enjoying the desert during the winter months. He is survived by his wife, Louise; son: Robert T. (Debra) Adamson, Wasilla, Alaska; James C. (Laura) Adamson, North Salt Lake, Utah; William T. (Kelly) Adamson, Preston, Idaho; daughters: Sandra (Alvin) Curtis, Ogden, Utah; Linda (Dennis) Sullivan, Montecito, California; Kathy (Art) Barten, Salt Lake City, Utah; Mary Facer, Phoenix, Arizona, Sharon (Dick) Dickerson, Pearland, Texas; 28 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister: Helen Lucille (Junior) Dayton, South Weber, Utah; step-children: Diane (Steve) Watters, Brigham City, Utah; Laura (Mike) Rhees, Liberty, Utah. He was preceded in death by a son, and seven grandchildren. Graveside Services will be Friday, September 15, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Brigham City Cemetery. No viewing will be held. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Primary Children's Hospital.
