Lurlien M. Florence
OGDENa"Lurlien M. Florence, sweetheart to Joseph H. Florence for more than 50 years, returned to her Heavenly Father on July 24, 2002, after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family who has been so kind and caring to their Mom through this difficult illness.
Lurlien was born on January 22, 1931 to Earl W. and Mary L. Morris, the eighth child in a wonderful family of eleven children. She married Joe on April 18, 1952 in the Salt Lake Temple. They raised four children and her family now consists of 20 grandchildren and six great grandchildren, all who have great love for their Grandma. Each family member learned great spirituality, obedience, honesty, and dignity from her. Lurlien's home and her family were always her pride and joy. She devoted her whole life to building family traditions and making her home an example to them all.
Lurlien attended Ogden City schools and graduated from Ogden High. She loved the Gospel and served in many capacities in her wards and stakes of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a long time member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Her favorite church calling was serving a full time mission with Joe to the Vancouver British Columbia mission where she was very effective and loved by all that met her. She developed a missionary teaching book that was very effective and has been used by many missionaries since. She also served the last eight years as a part time church service missionary on Temple Square. Every day of her service she loved and felt very fulfilled.
Early in her life, as a dark haired beauty, she won many beauty contests and served as Miss Ogden, Miss Hill Air Force Base, Miss Pioneer League Baseball Queen and a finalist as Miss Utah.
She was an accomplished porcelain doll maker, china painter and filled her home with her work. She loved skiing and spent many days with family and friends at Snow Basin. She also loved to golf and to just be outside.
Her four children, Nanette (Larry) Nelson of Layton, J. Brad (Mellyn) Florence of Ogden, Julie (Steve) Brown of North Ogden, and Michael E. (Rachel) of Ogden, survive her. Her Mother and Father, two brothers and one sister preceded her in death. Her sisters, Daisy Hales, Etta Dawson, Opal Urry, and Marge Call, and her brothers, Earl Morris, Sterling Morris, and David Morris, survive her. Joe and Lurlien also had six friends that were like brothers and sisters to them, Dick and Gloria Myers, Roy and Marilyn Nelson, and Nate and Phyl Tanner.
The family expresses thanks to the kind care of the Doctors V. Hansen and G. Biddulph and caregivers from IHC Hospice who helped so much during her illness.
