Lyneer Charles Smith Click here to listen to Funeral Service Lyneer Charles Smith, at age 91 and five days, completed his mortal journey the evening of October 30, 2015; and somewhere in Heaven, a lucky choir of angels has a new Director. Lyneer was born in the small farming town of Virden, NM. He grew up in a happy, humble home, where he developed a great love of music. In his early teens, a farming accident severely injured his left leg. After several months of confinement fortunately the wound healed. From 1944 to 1946 he served with the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps on Okinawa. On Sundays he played the piano for various religious services and was given use of a jeep for transportation. He liked that! From 1946 to 1948 Lyneer served in the East Central State Mission. He accompanied the Mission Quartet at various programs throughout the area. Five guys traveling in a small coupe was not comfortable. Lyneer began music studies at BYU in 1948. He met a lovely girl with a beautiful voice, and on June 4, 1949, he married Inga Plaas in the Slake Lake LDS Temple. After receiving a Master's degree in music, he began teaching at Mesa Arizona High School. Many life-long friendships were formed there. In 1960 Lyneer began advance study at the University of Arizona in Tucson. In 1964 he accepted a position in the music department of Weber State College in Ogden, Utah. After a distinctive career as a choral director and vocal instructor, he retired in 1989. Lyneer and Inga shared many experiences working together in their music careers while also raising six children. Inga died on July 24, 1983. Active in the LDS Church, Lyneer served on the Church General Music Committee and as a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, plus various ward, stake and Temple callings. He married Ilene Saunders Cook on February 18, 1989. Lyneer and Ilene served in the Sydney Australia in 1990 -1992. Lyneer had a special calling as Temple Choir Director. The choir performed at many church meetings throughout the extended area. From 1996-1997 they served a mission in the Illinois Nauvoo Mission where Lyneer's musical talents were used frequently in various productions. Lyneer Smith had a beautiful smile. His genuine warmth and sincere caring endeared this master teacher to many. He loved little children and they returned that love. They brought smiles to his face and joy to his heart. Lyneer and Ilene were able to travel to many places in the world. These travels enriched their lives and in later times blessed them with happy memories. Lyneer was preceded in death by his wife, Inga; son, David W. Smith; his parents; brothers, Henry R., Osborne and Laurence Smith; sisters, Beatrice Smith Merrell and Edith Smith Gardener; granddaughter, Christine Lucero and Nephew, Jesse Smith. Survived by his wife, Ilene; sister, Marlene Smith Lemieux (Marc); brother-in-law, Hyrum Plaas; sister-in-law, Joni Smith; son, Nolan L. Smith; daughters, Melody Hansen and Diane, Becky, and Lynda Smith; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; step-sons, Brian D. Cook and Lynn W. Cook; ten step-grandchildren and ten step-great-grandchildren; also many special nephews and nieces. Funeral services for Lyneer will be held at 10 AM on Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Pleasant Valley Fifth Ward, 5735 Crestwood Drive, So. Ogden. A viewing will be held on Thursday, November 5th at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. from 6 to 8 PM and prior to the service at the church from 8:30 to 9:30 AM. Interment at 3:30 PM on Nov. 6th at Elysian Gardens, 1075 E. 4580 So., Salt Lake City.
