Martha Gay Stromberg
OGDEN - Martha Gay Stromberg, born August 31, 1911 in Ogden, Utah died Sunday morning, December 20, 2009 at the age of 98. Martha enjoyed life to the fullest. She believed that each day she had the responsibility to create a better world. She asked herself "Have I Done Any Good in the World Today" and she proceeded to wholeheartedly go about spreading good deeds and good will. She grew up in a loving family. Her parents, Newton Adelbert (Del) Gay and Florence (Queen) Chisholm Gay devoted their energy into making their family the center of their life for Martha and her two sisters, Ellen and Florence. Martha married her sweetheart, Elroy Monson Stromberg, on September 26, 1935 in the Salt Lake Temple. Martha devoted her entire life making Elroy and their two daughters, Linda and Nancy, happy and secure and continued that care and concern for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She knew how to make those around her feel loved, and she knew the importance of sharing her sense of humor with everyone. Everyone who knew Martha and Elroy marveled at their ability to work so well together. They truly created an amazing team that could cook together, can together, shovel the neighbor's walk together, deliver Martha's home-made candies or crafts together, and especially share their love together with those who were in need.
Martha worked tirelessly in all of her church callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved the Primary and shared her love for the gospel with countless children. She served as Primary President and as a counselor in the Weber Heights Stake Primary. She also served as Relief Society President in the 61st Ward and completed many hours in compassionate service. She and Elroy worked in the church extraction program for many years.
Martha enjoyed many hobbies such as needlework, reading, golfing, and especially entertaining her friends and family with wonderful food and great get-togethers. She belonged to Agalia, a service club, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, bowling leagues, and golf associations. Martha also enjoyed traveling with friends and family. She claimed that she always had her suitcase packed and ready to go.
Martha is survived by daughters, Linda Gay Saunders, and Nancy S. Lowe (John); eight grandchildren: Chad Saunders (Lisa), Jody Leatham (Blake), Mejken Greenwood (Kris), Matthew Lowe (Charlot), Jed Lowe (Tarris), Zachary Lowe (Heather), Rachel Lowe, Nicholas Lowe (Mary); and eleven great-grandchildren: Jacob, Ryan, Jared, and Lauren Saunders, Ashlynd, Colton, Savannah and Sophia Greenwood, Nathaniel, Luke, and Gavin Lowe.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elroy; her parents; her three sisters; and one grandson, Elroy Monson Lowe.
The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Mt. Ridge Assisted Living for their loving care extended to Martha during her stay and also Alpine Hospice.
