Mary Rhea Stokes Hughes
OGDEN - Mary Rhea Gray Stokes Hughes passed away peacefully on July 25, 2008 from natural causes. Mom is now "Skiing with Jesus". Mom was born on December 24, 1929 in Fort Sumner, NM to Ivan Hezekiah and Leona Fern Gray.
After growing up in New Mexico and Texas, Mom joined the Army and was a nurse's aide during the Korean War. While in the Army, Mom married Donald J. Stokes, Jr. They were later divorced. This union produced four children. In 1975, Mom met and married H. Boyd Hughes. This union included three more children. Their three kiss tradition started then and still lives on today. Mom also worked for Hill AFB before retiring in 1989. Mom was a member of the LDS Lorin Farr 1st Ward.
Mom's love for music and her Martin guitar were a source of hundreds of hours of enjoyment, entertainment, and fun. Mom was a master of the western and country classics. Mom's passion for music has inspired her children and grandchildren to pursue an interest in music both vocally and instrumentally.
Family gatherings and reunions, especially with our family from Texas, were a high point in Mom's life. They could never come often enough and always ended to soon, Y'all. On Grandma's wall there is plaque that reads "No matter where I serve my guests, it seems they like my kitchen best!" This was the epitome of Grandma. Grandma's homemade mashed potatoes and gravy were legendary. Grandma's kitchen table was better than any therapist's couch. Although our Mother and Grandma will be missed, her counsel, advice, and unconditional love will live on for generations to come.
Mom is survived by her husband Boyd and six of her children: Monte (Shelleice) Stokes, Donna (Gary) Wagstaff, Danny (Kathy) Stokes, Margo (Bruce) Loftus, Christine (Ralph) Pierce, Douglas B. Hughes all of the Ogden area; 34 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; and her sisters Jinx (Rene) Snead, Ruth (Chester) Burkhalter, Merl (Bobby) Stokes, and Joan (James) Waites all of Texas. Rhea (Mom) was greeted in heaven by her Parents; her brothers Howard and Ross; her sister Leah; her grandson Bryan; her step-son David; Pappy, Tissy and Cha-Cha.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday July 31, 2008 at 11:00 am at Lorin Farr 1st Ward on 7th & Adams. Friends and family may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 pm at Myers Mortuary at 845 Washington Blvd. and Thursday one hour prior to services at the church.
Interment: Evergreen Memorial Park 100 Monroe Blvd. Ogden.
