Mary Leonard Onstott

OGDEN - Mary Leonard Onstott passed away at Washington Terrace Health Center on February 15, 2004, after a courageous 15-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Mary was born December 29, 1913, in Farmington, Utah, to George Marvin Leonard and Mary Ann Sanders. She was the youngest of seven children. She attended Davis County schools, graduating from Davis High School in 1932. As a young teenager, Mary was orphaned, first by her mother's untimely death then followed by her father's death two years later. She was lovingly cared for by her six older brothers and sisters who tried to give her every opportunity they possibly could during the Depression years, including a college education.

Mary attended Brigham Young University for two years then transferred to Utah State Agricultural College where she received her bachelor's degree with a major in secretarial science. During her college years Mary was employed by Brigham Young University and at USAC in the Agricultural Economics Department. She later worked for Davis County.

While Mary attended college in Logan, she met Oscar L. Onstott from Kendrick, Idaho, a student also attending college. They were married September 20, 1938, in the Salt Lake City L.D.S. Temple. After 58 years together, Oscar preceded her in death on November 17, 1996.

She lived in Farmington, Utah; Logan, Utah; Kendrick, Idaho; Genessee, Idaho; Lava Hot Springs, Idaho; and Pocatello, Idaho, for 40 years before moving to Ogden 12 years ago.

Mary's life of 90 years is a testimonial of her value of hard work, integrity, service to family and friends, education and Christ like living.

She has always been a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in numerous positions such as visiting teacher; Mutual president and teacher; Relief Society teacher, counselor and president; genealogy instructor and Idaho Falls temple worker. She and her husband, served a mission to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, where they subsequently volunteered one week each month for several years.

Mary also served in the community, attending to the needs of many people. For a number of years she was a member of the Bannock County Home Economist Extension Council, assisting homemakers with various homemaking skills. She also volunteered for the American Red Cross.

Mary's interests included quilting, playing the piano, cutwork embroidery, crocheting, genealogical research, reading and homemaking skills.

She leaves a legacy of love and devotion to her family. We, her family, honor her for her unselfish dedication to each of us and for the noble life she has lived. She is survived by five children: Marlene (LaMar) Day, Bountiful; Lee (Mary Ann) Onstott, Santa Fe, NM; Donna Onstott, Ogden; Kenneth (Ann) Onstott, The Dalles, Oregon; and Linda (Jim) Maxson, Boise, Idaho. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one brother, Burnham (Allene) Leonard, Farmington. Her husband, parents, one infant twin daughter, Margene, and sisters Luverne L. Hinman, Margaret L. Moon, Louise L. Young, LaDell L. Moon and brother M. Prentice Leonard, preceded her in death.
