Maude Hipwell Barrow Conger Obituary (1910 - 2003)

Maude Hipwell Barrow Conger OGDEN - On February 26, 2003, our loving Mother, Grandma Maude and Great-grandmother passed away to the loving arms of her Heavenly Father at the McKay-Dee Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born May 30, 1910 in West Weber, Utah, a daughter of John Hipwell and Louisa Ann Knight Hipwell. She was in the first class to graduate from Weber High School. On August 14, 1931 she married Edward Leon Barrow. They were later divorced. On September 23, 1961 she married William E. (Bill) Conger. He died February 6, 1986. She worked at various tailoring mills and was employed at Royal McBee Printing Corporation at the time of her retirement. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Mound Fort Ward and was a visiting teacher. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Camp Mound Fort. In 1966, she became the second woman in Utah to roll a 700 series in bowling. In 1984, she was inducted into the Ogden Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame. When she was 90 years old she was still bowling on a Monday morning women's handicap league at Ben Lomond Lanes. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a hard worker and sacrificed much as she raised her six children. She maintained her own home and took care of herself till the day of her death. She loved to crochet and made afghans for each of her grandchildren when they graduated from high school. She also made baby shawls for the great-grandchildren when they were born. She enjoyed playing cards and at the age of 92 she always wanted to play a game with her children and grandchildren and could still beat them. Surviving are her four sons and two daughters, Paul (Barbara) Barrow, Marriott-Slaterville; Nelda (William) Carlos, Ogden; Carma (Floyd) Smith, Sequim, WA; Clair (Judy) Barrow, West Haven; Blaine (Laura) Barrow, Harrisville; and Dean (Ann) Barrow, Clearfield. She is also survived by a special niece who was raised as a sister, Golda Smith, and a sister-in-law, Virginia Hipwell; 23 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, three sisters, two husbands, and a baby granddaughter.
