Sunset, Utah
Michael Richard Adams was born on June 29, 1963, in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was born while his dad was stationed there, and spent his childhood in Fairbanks Alaska, where he lived until age 9. He spent the rest of his youth in Layton, Utah, where he attended Lincoln Elementary, North Layton Junior High, and Layton High School. He participated in choir, and after deciding that mechanics would be a more lucrative career, spent his time in the auto shop classes.
Mike was called to serve a mission in the New York, New York City Mission. He served for the assigned time of 18 months from September 1982 to March 1984, after which he came home and met his sweetheart. He met Naunie Stewart at a single adult dance in Hooper, Utah- it was April 13, 1984. Naunie was herself preparing to go on a mission, and had Mike been called to serve 2 years, this meeting would not have taken place! While Naunie served in the North Carolina, Charlotte mission, he worked and waited.
Mike and Naunie were married on May 28th, 1986 in the Jordan River Temple. They settled in Sunset, Utah where all of their 7 children were born.
He worked at an auto parts store, and an auto restoration shop in the first few years of his marriage. He completed his Schooling through Weber State College, and got his degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. He worked for Parker Hannifin for 5 years before being laid off. The next 7 years found him self-employed, fixing cars out of our garage. We were so grateful for all our friends and relatives who had cars break down, needed brakes done, and needed cars towed. He got hired at Hill Air Force base, and worked there for 17 years, until Jan. 27, 2023, when he retired. When he was asked what he was gonna do next, he said, "Anything I want."
He loved to work on cars. He could see the potential in them, and purchased most of his vehicles as projects. He made them run and kept them running. He was always the go-to guy if something mechanically went wrong. He was a Chevy lover. He started with a '66 Impala Wagon before he had his driver's license. He then had a Chevy Luv Truck, Blazer, Suburban, and extended cab long bed Pickup. His dream truck was a Crew Cab Chevy Silverado, Dark Blue. We often joked that the only Ford he would have at his house was the '65 Mustang that came with the marriage.
He participated in Scouting his whole life. He spent more than 30 years serving as Scoutmaster or Assistant Scout Master. He loved being a part of helping young men develop and grow. Countless boys have been impacted because of his service. He loved camping and spent a good portion of his vacation every year camping with scouts. As an adult leader, Mike attended Wood Badge training in 1991, and later served as a Wood Badge instructor. He was honored with a District Award of Merit, and he received the Silver Beaver award.
Mike belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved the gospel, and lived it. He served in many different callings, including Young Men leaders in the Ward and Stake, High Council, and Gospel Doctrine Teacher. He loved participating with Young Men camps and Trek.
Mike passed away early in the morning hours of March 21, 2023. He had been hospitalized since February 6th, with multiple complications of diabetes. The last few years have been challenging. We are blessed to know that he can now stand and walk and run and jump to his heart's content, and he isn't cold anymore.
Mike's parents, James J Adams and Carole Diane Taylor, and his sister Rebecca Ann Adams preceded him in death.
He is survived by his sisters Terry Lynne Christensen (Rick) of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Laurie Reeder (Daryl) of Taylorsville, UT, and his brother David Patrick Adams (Susan) of Tolleson, Arizona.
