Muriel W. Nicholas

Muriel Wight Nicholas passed away on December 14, 2014, in Tremonton, Utah, two days shy of her 96th Birthday.
She was born December 16, 1918, in Harper Ward, north of Brigham City, to Ephraim Emery and Lucille Lillywhite Wight, the oldest of nine children.
She attended Box Elder High School and earned a three-year Normal Degree in Education from
Brigham Young University. She put that degree to work by teaching in several small schools, including Boothe Valley, where she met her husband-to-be, Grant Brunker Nicholas. Following his service in the Army during WWII, the couple was married in the Logan LDS Temple on December 7, 1945.
They lived in Tremonton, Harper Ward, Payette and Stibnite, Idaho, Honeyville and Fielding. She has spent the past three years at the Bear River Valley Care Center, one of them with her husband, Grant, who passed away in July of this year.
She has been a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in
many callings, including Relief Society president, Primary president, Sunday School teacher and ward dance director.
She served with her husband in the California Arcadia LDS mission and the Salt Lake Family
History Mission. They also served together as ordinance workers in the Ogden LDS Temple.
While her first and favorite role was that of wife and mother, she supplemented the family
income by making her famous pies for the Thiokol lunchroom and for several restaurants, and was a substitute teacher. In later years she served as secretary of the Honeyville School and then as an aide at McKinley Elementary School in Tremonton. She used her talents in writing to pen those schools' songs.
That same talent was used to create numerous award-winning roadshows and plays. She was also well known for her candy-making skills and her delicious dipped chocolates.
Muriel is survived by her children: Grant (Wanda Twitchell) Nicholas, Lander, Wy.; Anne (LeRoy) Welling, Fielding, Utah; Elaine (Floyd) Jensen, Garland, Utah; Grace (James) Tustison, Salt Lake City, Utah; Ellen (Boyd) Cook and Mark (Carole Clouse) Nicholas, Honeyville; Nancy (Gene, deceased) Baker, Willard; Jerrold (Helena) Hogue and Barbara (Ray) Hatch, Fruitland, N.M.; 31 grandchildren and 83 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Kathryn Allsop, Beth Crook and Shirley Graham. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Grant, brothers, Leland and Ross; sisters, Marie Matthews, Janice Nicholas and Lola Richards; son-in-law Gene Baker and two grandsons, Brandon and Kyle Cook.
