Myrl Lavalle Slater Obituary (1934 - 2017)

Myrl LaValle Slater Myrl LaValle Slater, 82, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017. He was born June 12, 1934 in Marriott, UT to Raymond LaVell and Nevada Pearl Wardle Slater. Myrl married Kay Johnson on August 14, 1959 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He attended schools in Weber county, graduating from Weber High in 1952. He earned degrees from Weber College and University of Utah. Myrl worked as an engineer in the aerospace industry for both Marquardt Corp and Hercules Inc. retiring from the latter after decades of service. Myrl was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many positions over the years. He loved researching, writing about and documenting family history. He was currently serving as a Family History Consultant and was also a volunteer at the Ogden Family Search Library. He was a handyman who loved camping, hunting, fishing and the outdoors. In later life, he especially liked gardening (sometimes) and geocaching (anytime) and would frequently embarrass his family by crawling on hands and knees in populated places trying to find a hidden geocache! We would pretend to not know him and dad would simply say he would use his old age as an excuse for his behavior. He is survived by his wife Kay; daughter Brenda (David) Lloyd; sons Brian (Sherry) Slater, Steven (Tami) Slater and daughter Stacy (Jeff) Newey; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also, survived by his sister Gwen Rhodes; brothers Doyle (Connie) Slater and John (Marsha) Slater. Preceded in death by his parents and a brother Keith Slater. As per Myrl's wishes, there will be no formal funeral. Friends may visit with family Tuesday, February 21, 2017 from 9 to 10 a.m. at the LDS 9th Ward, 575 E. 3100 N. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Ben Lomond Cemetery, 526 E. 2850 N.
