Nancy Scothern Bates
I am the oldest of five children in my family. I have two sisters and two brothers, Chris Victor (Gervin), Reed Scothern (Darlene, deceased), Linda Gubler (Jerry) and Clark Scothern (Rachele). I was born on a snowy April 10, 1950 in Logan, Utah. For the next year and a half, I lived with my parents in a one-bedroom kitchenette in my Great Uncle Ern's basement. My parents, Clinton and Iona Scothern, named me Nancy. We lived in Logan until my sister came along and the one-bedroom kitchenette was no longer big enough.
The first home I remember is a small home in Providence, Utah. The kitchen window of our home faced north east and framed the beautifully lit Logan Temple at night. From there we moved to Ogden where I spent most of my growing up years. When I was 21 my family moved to North Ogden. I didn't stay long. Within a few months, in May of 1972, I married Kent in the Logan LDS Temple and changed my name from Nancy Scothern to Nancy Scothern Bates. We moved back to Ogden for a few years while we finished Collage. We spent one school year, 1975-76, in Cornish, Utah while we taught at West Side School District in Idaho. I taught third grade, Kent taught band/music. After that, back to Ogden for four years and then to North Ogden in 1980 where we stayed for 43 years until we moved to Marriott-Slaterville in April of 2023. My favorite place is wherever my family is.
After teaching for the year in Idaho I taught for a year in the Ogden School District. After that I took a few years off while my boys were little and stayed home with them. When Kevin started school, I started back and substituted for a year in various Weber School District Elementaries. The next year I got a position in Marriott-Slaterville at Pioneer Elementary where I stayed for twenty-three years until I retired in 2015. During that time, I taught first and second grade to lots of great kids.
I have had many callings in the church. I have had just about every calling there is in primary including Primary president and Stake primary music director. I was a Sunday School teacher. I was a Mia Maid advisor in the Young Women program. I was a counselor in the Relief Society presidency. Kent and I were co-chairmen of the ward activities committee. I served on the committee for the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the North Ogden 1st Ward. I served as the sacrament meeting chorister in our ward for several years.
I enjoy planting and caring for my flowers and vegetable garden. I like to attend concerts of all sorts from Utah Symphony or Tabernacle Choir to my grandkid's band and choir concerts and primary Sacrament meeting programs.
Kent and I love to travel. A few years ago, my sister, Chris, moved to Hawaii. One of my dream trips was a visit to her in that beautiful part of the world. Another wonderful trip that we took was a Fall Leaves Tour to the Church History Sites in New York and Ohio.
Some of my favorite things: My favorite color is red. Chocolate is my favorite food (if that counts as a food). My favorite children's book is "A Porcupine Named Fluffy" (what do you expect from a second-grade teacher?). My favorite movie is Camelot.
I am quite certain that none of you know that I sang with a women's barber shop quartet when I was in my teens. I still to this day enjoy barber shop music and harmony.
I am survived by my husband Kent. I have two sons. Brian and his wife Stephanie live in North Ogden and have 2 sons - Steven and Caiden. Kevin and Sarah live next door to us. Kevin has 3 sons and a daughter from his first marriage - Kyler, Carter, Hudson and Halli. Sarah has a daughter, Annabelle from her first marriage. Kevin and Sarah have a son, Russell, and a daughter, Lillian, together. I have lots of great nieces and nephews.
I'm enjoying a happy reunion with my parents, Grandparents, aunts and uncles, a great sister-in-law and a little granddaughter, Katelyn, that I've never had the privilege of getting to know.
I would like to thank the Intermountain Homecare Hospice Team, especially Julie and Courtney and the Marriott-Slaterville Relief Society sisters for all of the kind help and support they have given me and Kent in the last six months.
