Nettie Arlene Gould Mitchell 1942 - 2011
Brigham City - Arlene Mitchell, 69, passed away Saturday December 10, 2011 at Ogden Regional Medical Center after a long, painful and courageous battle with multiple health problems. With her passing, the world lost one of its kindest, most generous and loving souls.
She was born October 10, 1942 in Ogden, Utah to Chester Gould and Nettie Heinze. She was the third of four children. She is survived by two sisters and one brother, Carloynn (Wayne) Gibson, West Weber; Dawna Werno, Brigham City, and Dennis (Jimmie) Gould, Layton. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Arlene married the love of her life, Ronald Bill Mitchell August 18, 1960 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married for over 51 years. Surviving are her husband and five children: Clair G. (Rochelle), Ogden; Dana (Mark) Webster, West Chester, OH; Evan (Marcia), Herriman; Gina (Nathan) Johnson, Clearfield; and Heidi (Cory) Jacobs, Bountiful. She has twenty-two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Arlene's focus was always on her family and she was happiest when her children would come to visit. Even when she was too ill to leave her bedroom, she still wanted the family to come and be with her.
Arlene grew up in Roy, UT, lived for a few years in Clinton, UT and Huntington Beach, CA and has lived in Brigham City, UT for the past 40 years. She attended Roy Elementary School and graduated from Weber High School. She also attended college at Weber State College and Utah State University, where she studied psychology. Arlene was foremost a mother and homemaker, but she worked for several years in the warehouses at Hill Air Force Base as she helped her husband complete his education. Later, when her children were in school, she worked as a customer service representative for insurance companies and for Flying J.
She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in various callings throughout her life. She served as a Stake missionary with her husband and served a full-time mission from 2008 to 2010 with her husband at the Family and Church History Mission in Salt Lake City, UT. She was a warm, friendly, and out-going person who carried with her a special missionary zeal and wanted to tell everyone she met about the gospel of Jesus Christ. She was always looking for ways to help those who were less fortunate and the down-trodden. She served for several years as a volunteer for the Habitat for Humanity in Brigham City and involved her family in these activities as well.
Arlene loved to travel and visited almost every state in the United States. She also traveled to Mexico, Canada, and Chile. She went on a cruise that included five Caribbean nations: Haiti, Aruba, Curacao, Panama, and Costa Rica. She loved the cruise and was anxious to go on another one.
Arlene always tried to maintain an attractive home and welcomed several foreign exchange students to come live with her family during the school year. Those associations resulted in friendships that have continued through the years and she has remained in contact with them through e-mail.
