Norris Winsor Goold

–

Brigham City, UT

BRIGHAM CITY - Norris Winsor Goold passed away on Monday, May 19, 2008 at the age of 86. He was born in Monroe, Utah, March 11, 1922 a son of Binning and Emma Goold, graduated from South Sevier High School in 1940, and served 37 months in the Army Signal Corp. during WWII. He married Geraldine (Geri) Levie in the Salt Lake Temple October 30, 1946. They had the joy of raising a lovely family of seven children.
typical of the time, as a boy, he learned a work ethic on the labor-intensive family farm in Monroe that helped him in later achieving some work projects. He received a Bachelors Degree from BYU in 1948, and a Masters Degree in Education from BYU in 1950. He later returned to BYU by invitation to receive training in some summer National Science Foundation Institute workshops. He taught school for 23 years mostly in Granite District, and also worked part time in engineering at KSL-TV during the early years of the station. In "spare time" he built several homes and an apartment project on Capitol Hill, Salt Lake City - keeping the apartments that were a joint work effort with his wife Geri. As busy as those years were, along with family home movies and photos show a fine family life with travel, involvement with friends and extended family, church activity, etc. featuring their seven children. Geri was in a small plane crash on August 7, 1979 leaving her with some severe handicaps. This did not stop the couple from being "World Travelers", and one of their choice travel experiences was to Palestine & Egypt with a BYU Tour seeing the biblical lands and walking where the Savior walked. Geri passed away May 8, 1985.
Norris married Betty Jean Knowlton Collmar, November 21, 1987. This marriage was solemnized in the Logan Temple June 16, 1989, and with that marriage he acquired another family of four children and their families. This couple has resided in Brigham City. Some of their choice travel experiences were in Europe and particularly in London where they were both able to find ancestral roots and homes. They worked together on their individual PAF pedigree lines, including pictures and histories being inserted in the pedigree and compiled on their individual family CDs that could be used on any computer and distributed to family members. Betty Jean and Norris each have a pedigree line connecting in English Royalty and going back to Adam.
The major motivation in Norris' life was in his love of our Savior, and he always had a church job including; High Councilman in Salt Lake Stake, and a mission in the Utah Salt Lake North Mission Office. Scouting included canoe trips down the Snake River. He wrote a pageant for a South Sevier Stake bi-centennial 1976 celebration, and conducted a stake choir in the presentation of that pageant. More recently he served four years as an ordinance worker in the Ogden Temple. This was wonderful always working with the Spirit and it included having ideal brotherhood. As a member of the service award winning VFW Post 1695, he participated, with comrades, in over 50 graveside military honor guard services. Veterans, having shared war, have a great brotherhood, and this was all brought together by the most able leadership of Norma Nelson.
Choice training, as a classical clarinetist as a boy, gave him a passion for beautiful symphony music and associations with musicians and musical experience throughout his life. More recently he made an amateur CD of his clarinet playing. He took a clarinet program to rest homes. Most enjoyable was in providing a part in the daytime entertaining for his lovely mother-in-law at Sunshine Terrace Day Care Center in Logan. This also brought involvement with wonderful people associated with the music dept. of USU. His musical passion is being expressed in him playing Mozart Clarinet Concerto 2nd Mvt. at his own funeral - obviously by recording.
His children, stepchildren, and wife Betty Jean survive him. With the addition of her family they have a large total family - and counting. His childrenare Janet Shon (deceased), Linda Maynes, Gary (Elaine) Goold, Steven (Elizabeth) Goold, Valerie (John) Gavin, Cynthia (Kreg) Crofts, and Mary Lynee (Ronni) Jensen. Stepchildren are Bruce Collmar (deceased), Dennis (Wendy) Collmar, Daine (Rich) Zundell, and Jeff Collmar. As the youngest in his original family, he was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers (Fred, Lee and Harold), and two sisters (La Rue and Merle).
