Opal Nicholas Tingey Obituary (1916 - 2006)

BRIGHAM CITY - Opal Nicholas Tingey, 89, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away one day short of her 90th birthday, Monday, September 18, 2006. She was born on September 19, 1916 in Willard, Utah to Gordon Bert and Hannah Elizabeth Brunker Nicholas. She was the last survivor of their seven children. She attended school in Willard and graduated from Box Elder High School and LDS Seminary. She worked at Bushnell General Hospital as a telephone operator and later transferred to the Brigham City telephone office. She was there until the office closed. In fact, she was at work the last day the operators said. "Number, Please", as everything converted to dial telephones. She also worked for Powers Flowers, J.C. Penney's, and Baron Woolen Mills. On December 28, 1945, she married Gayle Korth Tingey in Salt Lake City. Their marriage was later solemnized December 19, 1966, in the Logan LDS Temple. Born to this union were Cheryl (Keith) Allred, South, Ogden, UT; Laurene Powers, Henderson, NV; Gordon Tingey, Ogden, UT; Douglas (Cindy) Tingey, West Jordan, UT; and Sheldon (Theresa) Tingey, Brigham City, UT; She was a beautiful seamstress and loved to garden, oil paint, travel, and sing in the Ward choir. She was always very active in the LDS Church and served in many leadership, teaching, and music positions. Surviving family include her five children, 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; six siblings, Edith, Freda, Thurza, Roberta, Gordon, and Hannah; son-in-law, Geoffrey Powers, and granddaughter, Chelsea Tingey. Funeral Service will be Thursday, September 21, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Myers Mortuary Chapel, 205 S. 100 E., Brigham City. Friends may call on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 10:00 to 10:40 a.m. at the Mortuary. Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery.
