Paul Marston Smith

–

Sandy, UT

Dr. Paul Marston Smith passed away from a stroke on November 21, 2006 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. He was the eldest child of Thomas Ole (T.O.) Smith and Nina Hadley Smith, born July 17, 1929 in Ogden, Utah.

Educated in the schools of Weber County, Paul graduated from Weber High School, earned a Bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University (1953), and Master's and Doctorate degrees from USC (1955, 1960), including Masters Thesis of the Year honors.

In December of 1952 he married Verna Timmins in the Salt Lake Temple. After teaching and serving as a superintendent of schools in Southern California, he, Verna and their family of nine children moved to Murray, Utah where he owned and managed several small businesses.

Later, after one of their missions, they moved to Port Angeles, WA. Through the years their homes in California, Utah and Washington State were known to all as having an open door. Dozens of youth called their house "home" and lived with them for a few months, up to a year, and more.

A life-long active member of the LDS church, Paul served with uncommon dedication in every calling in which he was asked to serve, including Scoutmaster, counselor in the Stake Presidency, High Councilor, Branch President, Elders Quorum President, teacher of youth, and many other callings. He was awarded the Silver Beaver for his years of outstanding service in the Scouting organization. As a young man, Paul served in the Norwegian mission under President Sherman Gowans (1947-1949), then in his latter years he and his wife, Verna, served for two years in the Greece Athens Mission as the office couple under President R. Douglas Phillips. A few years later, they served a second two-year mission at the LDS Institute at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Two brothers, Vern and Carl; a daughter, Paula and a grandson, Brycie, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Verna and their children, Ole (Dena); Stuart (Shar); Monta Thomas (Rob); Catherine Hobbs (Steven); Robert (Leslie); Carol Baker (Bryce); Karen Ouimette (Sam); David (Carol); Daniel (Valerie), 45 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his two sisters, Olene S. Walker (Myron) and Karen S. Soelberg (LeGrand).

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 24, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hillcrest 2nd Ward, 8735 Harvard Park Drive (approximately 1100 East, off of 8600 South), Sandy, Utah. A viewing will be held at the church on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Funeral services under the direction of Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd., Ogden.

Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Paul and the family request donations be sent to the Perpetual Education Fund (PEF) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
