Rees Herbert Johnson Obituary (1924

Rees Herbert Johnson WEST HAVEN - Rees Herbert Johnson, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family, Monday, February 17, 2014. He was born November 4, 1924 in Springdale Idaho to Rees Louis and Julia May Johnson. Rees served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was assigned to the 780th Amphibious Tank Battalion. He was deployed to the Pacific Ocean Theatre and participated in the invasion of LEYTE in the Philippines, as well as the invasion of Okinawa, Japan. He was a highly decorated veteran, receiving medals such as the Purple Heart, Philippine Liberation, Asia Pacific Campaign, and the World War II Victory medal. He also received two Bronze Service Arrowheads, among others. He married LaVon Lewis, on April 13, 1946 in Morgan, Utah. Their marriage was later sealed in the Logan LDS Temple for all time and eternity. They enjoyed 66 wonderful years together. He was an active member and high priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He retired from Hill AFB in 1976 with 31 years of government service. For many years, Rees and LaVon spent their winters in Yuma, Arizona. They also enjoyed traveling the coastline of California and spending their summers camping at The Eagles campground up the Ogden Canyon. Rees loved to spend time with his grandchildren, telling them stories of his life experiences. He was so proud of them. They know they wouldn't be the young men they are today had it not been for their time shared with their loving Grandpa. He always saw the positive in everything and made people laugh with his great sense of humor. Rees will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Rees is survived by his wife, LaVon, children, Gary and Wade (Judy), and his two grandchildren, Preston and Matthew. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and two sisters. The family would like to thank Gentiva Hospice for their special care. They would also like to thank the Roy Fire Department for their assistance in his final days. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Myers Roy Mortuary, 5865 S. 1900 W. Roy, Utah. The family will meet with friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:40 to 10:40 am. at the mortuary prior to services. Interment will be in the Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road, South Ogden, where Military honors will be accorded by the Utah Army National Guard.
