Brigham City, Utah
Alma “Reid” Goldsberry
November 27, 1938 – May 7, 2025
Reid Goldsberry was born in Tremonton, Utah on November 27, 1938, to Clarence and
Elda Goldsberry. He was the third and youngest child of his family. He grew up on a
small farm in Bear River City where he learned the value of hard work. On the farm was
a barn wherein a basketball hoop was attached, and this is where he gained his love for
basketball. If he wasn’t working or practicing basketball on the farm, he was usually
found trying to find someone to tease.
His family moved to Brigham City, Utah, when he was around the age of 12. He became
involved in his local ward through the invitation of friends. He enjoyed the various youth
outings that were planned for the youth in the ward and enjoyed playing with and
running around the city with his friends.
In his high school years, he played basketball and tennis at Box Elder High School and
in basketball earned All Region and All State status as a senior. He was also elected
Senior Class President. His dream was to play college basketball and continue his
education. With the help of one of his coaches he was able to walk on the basketball
team at Utah State University. After his sophomore season he was invited by his
Bishop to serve a church mission. He often told his children that he had no idea why he
said yes, but that this decision was one of the most significant decisions that he ever
made in his life.
He was called to serve in the Australia, Sydney mission, where he developed a strong
testimony of the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ which shaped how he lived
the remainder of his life. In Australia he played on and coached the Mormon Yankees
basketball team. He enjoyed the tours that the team would make around Australia. He
often talked with his family about his games and his experience beating the Australian
Olympic team.
After his mission he returned to Utah State University to play basketball and complete
his bachelor’s degree in English and Secondary Education. He loved his time at Utah
State playing with and against some of best basketball players in the NCAA and being
coached by LaDell Anderson. He particularly enjoyed playing with Wayne Estes and
often talked about how good he was and all that he might have accomplished in the
NBA had he not passed away during his senior season.
At Utah State he met and was sealed to Sherry Watkins in the Logan, Utah Temple on
March 18, 1963. They settled in Brigham City, Utah where Reid worked as an English
teacher and coach at Box Elder High School. Other than a short time in Las Vegas, he
lived in Brigham City. Reid and Sherry are the parents of 5 children, 4 sons and a
daughter.
Reid enjoyed gardening and yard work. If he wasn’t teaching or coaching one would
find him working in his garden or serving in the church. He would give most of the
produce and fruit from the garden to those in his neighborhood. He was known for
having a meticulous yard and he took great pride in keeping the lawn green and well-
manicured. He also enjoyed attending Utah State football and basketball games with his family and extended family members.
At the forefront in his life was Jesus Christ and service and involvement in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was the best home teacher / minister in the
church. He was companions with each of his sons and taught them the importance of
taking care of our neighbors. He served as a Bishop of his beloved Brigham City 2nd
ward and enjoyed working with and serving people. For almost 15 years he loved
serving as an ordinance worker in both the Ogden and Brigham City Utah temples. He
served valiantly in many additional callings throughout his life. He lived a life of service
to others.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister LaRee Braegger, his brother DeWayne
Goldsberry, and daughter-in-law Kathryn Goldsberry. He is survived by his wife, Sherry
Goldsberry, son Brett Goldsberry (Kristi), son Bart Goldsberry (Jennifer), son Darin
Goldsberry (Kaylin), son Brandon Goldsberry (Bridget), daughter Tai Jeppson (Joe), 20
grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank those that cared for Reid at DaVita Pleasant View
Dialysis Center and the nurses and others at Ogden Regional Medical Center on the
day of his passing. Reid passed away due to incidents of age on May 7, 2025.
