Renae Knighton Powell

Renae Knighton Powell passed away at home in Harrisville, Utah on December 2, 2015 after a seven year battle with cancer. Renae was born in Blue Island, Illinois on July 4, 1957 to James and Nona Knighton. Renae was the 6th of 10 children. During her childhood, she lived in Illinois, New Jersey and Colorado. Renae attended the University of Colorado and BYU, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in Special Education. Renae married Guy Powell in the Ogden LDS Temple on December 15, 1978. They initially resided in Monterey, California. They moved from there to Orem, Utah, then to Lake Elizabeth, California, and finally to Harrisville, Utah.
Renae worked as a special education teacher at Gramercy Elementary School from 2001 until she was no longer able to continue working due to the cancer. Prior to her employment at Gramercy, Renae had worked at a software company, working a nighttime shift in order to support her husband through school and to take care of her children during the day. She lived a life of selfless service.
A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served as a Relief Society Counselor, Primary Counselor, and Primary Teacher. Renae's hobbies included sewing, quilting, crochet, playing piano, and baking. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Renae touched the lives of everyone she met, and had a unique ability to make others feel loved, comfortable and welcome. She had a special compassion for children, and she loved to decorate her home for the holidays. We will never forget making gingerbread houses with her or her collection of nativity scenes.
Renae is survived by her husband Guy and five children, Eve Renae MacBeth (San Antonio, TX), Thomas William Powell (Rawlins, WY), Kevin James Powell (Ephraim, UT), Richard Norris Powell (Pontiac, MI) and Angela Marie Powell (Harrisville, UT), her thirteen grandchildren, eight siblings, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday December 12th at 11 am at the LDS chapel at 1560 N 200 W, Harrisville, Utah with a view prior from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. A viewing will be held at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd., Friday December 11th from 6 to 8 pm.
