Richard Duane Udell (R.D. Udink) Obituary (1927

Hooper - Richard passed away February 20, 2002. He was born at the Ogden Dee Hospital on March 19, 1927. He was the seventh of fourteen children born to Gerritt ('George') Udink and Gessiena ('Grace')Hanssen. Both parents immigrated from Holland. Richard attended Weber County Schools and except for three years in the U.S. Navy, he spent his entire life in the Weber County area. He hired out to the OUR&D Railroad Co. June 3, 1943 and retired from the U.P. Railroad in May of 1989. He was a member of the LDS Church and served many years as Ward Clerk and in a Bishopric. Richard married Hazel Roberta powell December 1, 1950 in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Their marriage was later solemnized on January 28, 1965 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised three children, Suzan Johnson (Val) Layton; Richard G. Uday (Connie), Salt Lake City; Michael Duane Udink, Roy. Richard was preceded in death by his wife Hazel, brothers George Jr., David L. and sister Minnie Louise. He is surived by: his children; his brothers, Herman, Eugene, Melvin, William Henry Carlos ('Tom'); his sisters, Nora Grace, Mary Ann, Grace June, Martha Kathleen, Emma Fay; and his favorite cousin and friend John Vlaanderen. Richard also is proudly survived by 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Richard enjoyed his house, his horses, working in his yard, and the warmth of the sun. Richard says 'adios' to his friends and relatives and says he will meet them 'up river'. Oh beat the drum slowly and play the fife lowly Play the dead march as you carry me along. Take me to the green valley and lay the the sod o'er me For I'm an old cowboy and I know I've gone home. We will miss him dearly. His family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Steven Warren, and to Utah Heritage Hospice for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, Richard requested any donations be made to either the American Diabetes Association or the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
