Richard F. Wight

–

Perry, UT

Perry- Richard F. Wight passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at his home. He was born on August 1, 1939 to Edgar and Elaine Wight. Richard moved to Brigham City when he was a teenager. He first saw his eternal companion, Kathleen Hansen, soon after the move. He began dating her while attending Box Elder High School. Richard and Kathleen were marred on July 26, 1963 in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity.
Richard graduated from Box Elder in 1957 where he excelled in several sports. He majored in English at Utah State and played baseball for the Aggies as well. He graduated from Utah State with a degree in English and a minor in PE/Coaching.
Dad taught English at Box Elder High for 36 years. During that time he coached numerous sports including baseball, basketball, football, volleyball and tennis. He was a great teacher who helped students think and learn in unique ways. Richard built many warm and lasting friendships with faculty and students.
Richard served many people as a member of the LDS church. He served a full time mission to the Central Atlantic States. He was the Bishop of the Eagle Mountain Singles Ward. He also served in many other callings throughout the church. He especially enjoyed taking youth groups on hiking, fishing, or backpacking trips.
Dad worked for 30 years as an employee of Brigham City as a caretaker for the baseball and softball fields at Pioneer Park. He loved baseball and took great pride in providing a place for youth and adults to play a great game. He was in charge of teaching swimming at the Brigham City pool, and coached in many community youth sports programs.
Dad enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with his family and friends. After retiring from Box Elder, he was able to build a cabin in Island Park where he had many great experiences. He loved to watch and play sports, but mostly he loved to watch his kids and grandkids in all of their activities.
Dad was "old school" in the best sense of the phrase. He didn't care about having the latest thing; a big house, a new car, or going on expensive vacations, and yet his family never felt cheated. Plain and simple, spending time with his family brought dad happiness, and we wouldn't have had it any other way.
Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Wight; children: Douglas (Amy) Wight of Perry, David (Sherilyn) Wight of North Las Vegas, Thomas (Naly) Wight of Virginia, Daniel (Natasha) Wight of Perry; grandchildren: Hannah, Madison, Stockton, Kaitlyn, Alexa, Brooke, Theany, Ashlyn, Bryson; and his brothers: Jeff and Mike Wight.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Edgar David Wight.
