"Learn this well, the last ride is never the last ride. And the end is not the end." -Richard Rowland
Robert Duane Jones passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, October 17, 2019, at the age of 69. Bob was born in 1950 in Roosevelt, Utah, to Ferron and Ruth Jones. He graduated from Weber High School and served an LDS mission in the Philippines. He served in the US Army Reserve. His early professional career involved being a hunting guide and building custom archery equipment, and later on management and large-scale manufacturing.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Ferron and Ruth, and his step-son Corey Stephens. He is survived by his wife Ronda, his sisters Jacqueline (Ray Johnson), Jennifer (Roger de Gumuzio), and JoAnn (Byron Memmott), his sons Jeremy (Shayla), Cody, and Mikel, his step sons Nathan Stephens and Zachary Stephens (Melissa, and their daughter Amaryllis), his grandchildren Kennedy (Rocky Morton) and Sage, and his great-granddaughter Novalee.
Robert was one of a dying breed, a true western cowboy. He was happiest in the outdoors. He loved riding in the wild places, letting his mind run free and seeing creation framed in the ears of a horse. He loved all animals, but he had a special love for horses and was an enthusiastic and polished horseman. He was a dedicated historian, particularly interested in the old west and war history, and he was passionate about details and historical accuracy. He was a skilled hunter and survivalist, taking hunting expeditions all around the world, including Russia and Africa. He was an expert at building and using western weapons, principally the recurve bow, hunting firearms, and precision long-range rifles. Bob was an old-fashioned cowboy living in a modern world. He held traditional styles and values in high-regard and appreciated the qualities of our heritage and strived to live by those qualities.
Robert always had a witty joke to brighten your day. He was a master of the one-liner and punchline. He was a powerful and vivid story teller and loved to share his vast historical knowledge and his adventures with everyone he knew. He was a published author of western historical fiction and had a gift for taking you back to another time and painting a picture with words. The last ride is never the last ride, and Bob will live on within us as we remember our treasured moments with him and the stories he shared.
A funeral visitation will be held on Friday, October 25, from 2-4 pm at Myers Mortuary at 845 Washington Blvd in Ogden.
