Robert McCoppin
NORTH OGDEN - Robert Dewain McCoppin, 65, has stepped from this life, into the next on March 16, 2004, at his home, surrounded by the family he loved. His stay on this earth was ended after a valiant battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
Bob was born April 23, 1938 in St. Joseph, MO, the son of Dewain and Sylvia Blanche McCoppin. He graduated from Lafayette High School in St. Joseph, MO in 1956. While attending St. Joseph Junior College, Bob met the love of his life, Ruth Valeria Smith. After a week of blissful passion, Bob proposed and the couple were married on August 23, 1959 at the King Hill Methodist Church in St. Joseph, MO.
With his wife along, Bob continued his education. In 1960 he obtained a bachelor's degree at NW Missouri State in Marysville, MO. Then a master's degree from "Ole Miss" in 1963. In 1964 the young couple came to Salt Lake City so Bob could start work on his doctoral degree at U of U.
After being baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bob and Valeria were solemnly sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple for time and all eternity. Bob held many positions in the church, his favorite position being his head in his hands while asleep in sacrament meeting.
Bob and Valeria moved to North Ogden in 1971. Because of their wonderful friends and neighbors in the community, they often refer to their move as the best decision they ever made. After making North Ogden their permanent home, Bob became a small businessman, was an educator at Weber State University and taught at Weber High for over 25 years.
Surviving are his wife, Valeria Smith McCoppin; children, Randy Scott McCoppin, Washington Terrace; Tami Rochelle (Shawn) Paskins, South Ogden; Mindi Renee (David) Gifford, North Ogden; Angie Kristine McCoppin, North Ogden; and four grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Ima Joyce Smith, Platte City, MO; Phyllis Jean Wright, St. Joseph, MO; and Betty Louise Skokan, West Covina, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Special thanks to the ALS Northern Utah Support Group and IHC Hospice.
