Rulon Black

–

Ogden, Utah

Rulon Joseph Black, 77, passed away peacefully at his home in Ogden, Utah, on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

Rulon was born on March 20, 1948, in Ogden, Utah to Ellis and Lena Delcomte Black. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1966 and later attended Weber State University. He dedicated 38 years of service to Hill Air Force Base, retiring in 2006. He took pride in his work and valued showing up, sticking it out, and doing things well.

Known to family as “Smoke,” a nickname given by his father and brother, Rulon was impossible to miss—especially with his perfectly maintained handlebar mustache, his collection of colorful Hawaiian shirts, and his quick wit always locked and loaded. He had a sharp, sarcastic sense of humor, loved to joke around, and rarely missed an opportunity to get a laugh.

Rulon enjoyed reading, motorcycles, cars, music, sports, movies and could happily spend hours watching car and motorcycle TV shows. Bob Dylan held a special place in his playlist, and good music was never far away. He also deeply valued the many friendships he built over the years and stayed connected to friends from every chapter of his life.

He deeply cherished his nieces and nephews and showed his love by showing up—to birthdays, gatherings, and any event he was invited to. Christmas was especially important to him. He took great joy in assembling thoughtful gift bags filled with treats, loud noisemakers for the kids, and a tradition that everyone came to expect: Christmas ornaments.

Rulon is survived by his older brother, Lee Black, and many nieces and nephews who will miss his humor and steady presence.

He was preceded in death by his parents and seven sisters: Colleen Dickerson, Bonnie Crouch, Carol Black, Donna Rust, Erma Tifft, Norma Glidden, and Melva Lynn Hernandez Varen.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Warren–West Warren Cemetery, 750 N. 6700 W., Ogden, under the direction of Myers Mortuary of Ogden.

The “Smoke” behind the mustache and Hawaiian shirt, has ridden off into the sunset, leaving behind a trail of laughter, love and memories that will be cherished forever.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Rulon’s niece, Linda Boyer and nephew Richard Dickerson, along with many family members and healthcare professionals for their compassionate care and support given to Rulon during his final months.

Condolences, memories and photos may be shared with the family on his Memories Page at www.myers-mortuary.com
