Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother, Ruth Nadine Holmes Kelley passed away peacefully on November 19, 2021 in St. George, Utah.
Ruth was born on November 25, 1926 in Wilson, UT, to John and Sarah Harper Holmes, the second of seven children. She was raised and educated in Wilson, an unincorporated town west of Ogden, UT. There she enjoyed living and working on the family farm. After graduating from Weber High School, she completed her associate degree at Weber College. She then moved to Logan to attend Utah State Agricultural College. She met her eternal sweetheart, Darrell Major Kelley while attending Utah State. They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on December 17, 1948. Ruth graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics and Secondary Education. She enjoyed teaching home economics in the Ogden City and Weber County school districts. Her favorite teaching position, however, was at the Nevada State Girls School in Caliente, Nevada. She loved working with girls and was proud of their accomplishments.
After raising her family, she was hired by Weber State College to fill a position as a home economist for the Ogden Housing Authority, a position she enjoyed for many years. She valued the time she spent teaching classes and crafting with her senior clients and made many lasting friendships along the way.
Ruth was a talented seamstress. She could turn any piece of fabric into a beautiful article of clothing. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, and crocheting, and shared her talents with others through lessons or gifts. She was an avid reader and always kept a good book nearby.
Ruth was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was given many opportunities to serve during her lifetime. Serving others brought Ruth a great deal of happiness. She made sure that her family and friends were well cared for.
Ruth is survived by her children, Patricia (Jay) Ballard, Darrell Byron (LuAnn) Kelley, Colleen (Steve) Woodbury, Karen (Jeff) Anderson; 28 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren (3 more arriving soon); and 1 great-great grandson. She is also survived by her brothers Earl, Kenneth, and Bruce Holmes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell Major Kelley, a son David Holmes Kelley and his wife Arlene, her parents, and 3 sisters, Ann Wade, Lois Hancock, and Louise Holmes.
