CLINTON - Shirley Ann Cornelius Frye Layton, 67, passed away suddenly of natural causes at her home on January 1, 2008. Mom was born on December 21, 1940 in Mooresville, North Carolina. She was raised in North Carolina by her father, James Horace Cornelius and her grandma, Nannie Cornelius.

Mom attended Bandy's High School in Sherrill's Ford, North Carolina where she was the lead drum majorette. She married Javon Frye, Sr. on October 14, 1958. They were blessed with four children from this marriage. The family spent many years traveling abroad with the military, eventually settling in Riverdale, Utah. They were later divorced.

Mom was a member of the LDS Church. She worked at Hill Air Force Base for 28 years and was looking forward to retiring from her position as an information technology specialist in the near future.

Mom enjoyed spending time with her family and friends in a variety of activities, including golfing, camping, and traveling, as well as sewing beautiful dresses for her daughters when they were young. She was an avid Utah Jazz fan and loved watching her grandchildren compete in their sports. She was a devoted and caring friend to many, always willing to lend a listening ear or a helping hand.

Mom is survived by two daughters and two sons: Vera Simmons, Greely, CO; Vonna (Kevin) DuMicich, Albany, NY; Javon (Jay) Frye Jr. (Melanie), Layton, UT; and Jonathan (Annie) Frye, Clinton, UT. She was a proud grandma to 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Shirley also had a special love for her cat, Autumn. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother (Ernest) and her sister (Linda).

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 7 at 11 am at Myers Mortuary Chapel, 5865 South 1900 West, Roy. Friends and family may call at the mortuary Sunday, January 6 from 6-8 pm or from 9:45 -10:45 am prior to services.

Cremation is under the direction of Myers Mortuary. Mom's ashes will be reunited with those of her cherished sister, Linda, at Lake Norman, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Shirley's name to the American Cancer Society.
