Shirley Ann Stowers Taylor

OGDEN - Shirley Ann Stowers Taylor, 66, peacefully passed away at home on July 8, 2008 after a 40 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Her cheerful attitude and brilliant spirit inspired all who knew her.

Shirley was born May 29, 1942 in Ogden, Utah. She was the eldest daughter of J. Ray Stowers and Maurine Jackson Stowers. As a child she lived in Franklin, Louisiana; Grenada, Mississippi; Slaterville; Ogden and South Ogden. She graduated from Weber High School and attended Weber State College on a full-ride teaching scholarship. At WSC she was a member of L.D. Later she was a member of the Junior League of Ogden. She married the love of her life, Stanton M. Taylor, on December 15, 1961 in the Salt Lake Temple. Shirley often joked that she earned her PHT degree from the University of Utah (putting hubby through).

She was a member of the Shadow Valley Ward and served as a teacher in both primary and relief society. Even after the MS impaired her mobility Shirley served as a visiting teacher and visiting teacher supervisor for many years.

Shirley's greatest legacy is the impact she had on those around her. She faced each day with optimism and joy. She fought the effects of MS with courage and dignity, inspiring all who knew her with her strength. She was truly a hero.

She is survived by her husband Stanton; two sons and two daughters, Scott (Carolyn), Blake (Michelle), Kristy (Dwaine) Haws, Tara (Reed) Peterson; 11 grandchildren; her father J. Ray Stowers; three brothers Arthur (Pegge) Stowers, Steve (Carol) Stowers, Robert (Susanne) Stowers and her sister Lynnette (Kevin) Corbett.

Shirley was preceded in death by her mother Maurine Stowers and her grandson Taylor Haws.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 12, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Shadow Valley Ward Chapel, 5191 Old Post Rd., with Bishop Jeffrey Call officiating. Friends and family may call on Friday, July 11th at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Interment, Ben Lomond Cemetery.

The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to those who have served Shirley so compassionately; especially friends and neighbors and wonderful workers from Hearts for Hospice. Their friendship and acts of kindness improved her quality of life immeasurably.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, c/o Kristy Haws at http://main.nationalmssociety.org/goto/mtnmedical.teamtaylor or to the LDS Humanitarian Fund.
