Sterling B. Gardner Obituary (1926 - 2011)

Sterling B. Gardner ROY - Sterling (Sterk) B. Gardner passed away November 12, 2011, following a short illness. He was born in Deweyville, Utah on October 1, 1926, a son of Lloyd Montgomery and Clara Burbank Gardner. Sterk grew up in Deweyville, and graduated from Bear River High School. He joined the military shortly after graduating and was stationed in Japan with his unit. After his tour ended, he returned to Utah to work. Eighteen months later his Army Reserve unit was called back into service during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return from Korea he received an Honorable Discharge from the Army. He attended Weber State University when it was a junior college. He excelled in sports, and while at Weber State he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox, but decided to pursue other opportunities. Sterk married Dona Marie Sodenkamp on November 15, 1991 in Malad, Idaho, and was welcomed into her family by all. Dona and Sterk enjoyed the outdoors and spent many happy times fishing, hunting, and camping with family and friends. He worked at the Ogden Arsenal, Marquardt, and Williams International, where he was the Quality Control Manager. He retired in 1990. After retirement he spent his time hunting, fishing and enjoying his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, daughter, Pam (Mike) Sanford, step-children, Wendi (Kevin) Fage, Brady Pomeroy, 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, with another great-granddaughter due in December. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, Blaine (Ann) Gardner, Jolene (Glade) Jeppson, Corvill Gardner and Fern Gardner. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dale L. Gardner. The family would like to thank Dr. Nadya Wayment, Dr. Harold Johnson, and the doctors and nurses at McKay-Dee ICU for their kind and compassionate care during Sterling's brief illness. At Sterling's request he was cremated. A celebration of his life for family and friends will be held at a later date. Cremation under the direction of Myers Roy Mortuary.
