Terrie Hanrahan

–

Layton, Utah

Theo “Terrie” Hanrahan passed away peacefully in Layton, Utah, on October 12, 2026, after a short struggle with heart failure.

Terrie was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Armin and Theo Baier. She spent most of her formative years in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, where her father was a physician and partner at the Clinic of Internal Medicine practicing clinical cardiology. Terrie grew up in a warm and caring family with four siblings: two younger sisters and two younger brothers, the youngest being 12 years her junior. She learned responsibility as a teenager by taking care of her younger siblings and supporting her parents’ busy schedules, including her mother’s engagement in supporting the arts for children in Wauwatosa. She graduated from Divine Savior Holy Angels Catholic High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in medical technology at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. It was there that she met the love of her life, James “Jim” Hanrahan.

Terrie spent a few years as a medical technologist but found her passion in teaching skiing through the Professional Ski Instructors Association (PSIA). Her career as an accomplished ski instructor spanned more than 50 years and included teaching at Ski Sundown (CT), Alpine Valley (WI), Mt. Brighton (MI), Seven Springs (PA), and Snowbasin (UT). She loved teaching children, focusing on a fun-loving environment where safety and fun came first while children learned to ski, sometimes without realizing their own progress. For 15 years, Terrie served as director of the children’s program at Snowbasin, teaching many new instructors that kids need different coaching than adult ski learners. In recent years, she taught skiing with the Ogden Valley Adaptive program. In 2024, she was inducted into the PSIA Intermountain Hall of Fame at the Alf Engen Ski Museum.

Terrie loved attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, celebrating their accomplishments, and sharing in her daughter’s passion for archery. She spent many summers in northern Wisconsin at “the lake,” writing daily haiku in “Rey’s Days” and exploring her artistic side through a virtual Exploring Creativity Program offered by Jewish Family Service of Utah.

Terrie was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Jim; sisters, Mary and Ruth (Paul); brothers, Armin (Peter) and Gerard (Barb); son, Chris (Megan); daughter, Laura; and grandsons, Ian and Andrew.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Ogden Valley Adaptive or Utah Food Bank.
