Toshiko Miyawaki Obituary (1930 - 2023)

Toshiko Miura Miyawaki, 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at her home. Toshiko was born on June 20, 1930, in Sendai, Miyagi, Japan to Choji and Misao Miura. She attended general schooling and went to Young Women Besne School. Toshiko married Ken Miyawaki on July 24, 1953, in Japan. She traveled to the United States by Army ship for over 30 days with her 19-month-old son Kenny and arrived at the port of San Francisco December 3, 1956. She taught herself English and proudly became a citizen of the United States. She and Ken made their home in Davis County where she lived for 70 years. Toshiko was a loving Wife, Mom, Grandma and Bachan. She loved to sew and crochet; she had this amazing talent of being able to look at something and recreate it without a pattern or instructions and it always seemed to turn out better than the original. She was a such an artist with paper, she loved to do origami and received endless compliments and requests for her beautiful 3-D origami cranes. In the spring and summer months she loved tending to her garden growing a large variety of fruits and vegetables that she shared with everyone. She loved to travel, one of her favorite places to go was Los Angeles with a large empty suitcase to shop at the Japanese markets where she would fill up her shopping cart with her pre-made list. And she loved to cook, nothing made her happier than if someone enjoyed her food, she made the most delicious Japanese dishes which we will all miss. She could always be found at her grandkids and great-grandkids school concerts, sporting events and dance competitions where everyone lovingly referred to her as "grandma" because of her kind, sweet, funny, and generous nature. She enjoyed attending live sporting events and watching basketball and football on television. And once a week she looked forward to going to the Senior Community Center to take country line dancing lessons where she had the best time and made some of her closest friendships. Toshiko was employed as a cook at Jade Terrace in Roy and Kiki's Restaurant in Clearfield where she made many friends with co-workers and customers. She is survived by her children. Sons Kenichi (Emily Caparas), Richard, Robert (Dana Yoshimura); daughters, Susan (Jan Cooper), Julie (Jim Keith Gentry). 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Sisters-in-law Yasuko Shiba, Masako Hardwick, Sachi Kawabata and brother-in-law Richard Kawabata. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Ken Miyawaki, her parents, father-in-law Yozo Miyawaki, mother-in-law Matsuyo Miyawaki, sister Mieko Chiba, brother-in-law Kinji Chiba, brothers-in-law Hideo and Tom Miyawaki, Yoshi Ugaki, Kay Shiba, Larry Hardwick; and sisters-in-law Amy and Mitzi Miyawaki and Aya Ugaki. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at 11:00 am at Myer's Mortuary in Roy, 5865 South 1900 West. Friends may visit with family on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
