Tryntje ''Tena'' Tolsma Obituary (1910 - 2002)

Tyrntje (Tena) Van Esveldt Tolsma OGDEN - Tryntje (Tena) Van Esveldt Tolsma passed away at an Ogden care center, Saturday, December 7, 2002 after a brief battle with Leukemia. As she was throughout her remarkable life, she was surrounded by her loving family at her passing. Mom was born in the Netherlands on September 9, 1910, to Gerrit and Sytske Van Esveldt. In her youth she studied the piano and went on to become an accomplished performer. It was while both were accompanists for silent movies that she met the love of her life Eelke Tolsma, whom she married in 1935. Together they raised five children: Tiede (Ted), Sytske (Sita), Tryntje (Tina), Gerda and Andries (Andy). In the early 1950's she, Eelke and the children became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; something which helped to cement their decision to move to the United States, and to settle in Ogden, Utah, in 1956. She and Eelke were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple in 1958. Mom worked for many years at the Dee and then the McKay-Dee Hospital until she retired to care for her daughter Tena, who later succumbed to a brain tumor. She lived her Christian beliefs by example; always placing the needs of others, especially those of her family, ahead of her own. There is no way to sufficiently express how much she was loved by her family and by all who knew her. We will miss her terribly. Mom was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter Tena, her son Ted and her only brother, Andries. She is survived by her three remaining children, 16 grand children and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. The family wishes to express their sincerest thanks to the staff of the Wasatch Care Center in Ogden. Their love and devotion made the last month of Mom's life a happy one. Thank you all!
