Uriah F. Wood Obituary (1999)

Uriah F. Wood (Woody), age 92, filed his final flight plan for Somewhere Over the Rainbow, on July 20, 2005. Born Sept. 13, 1912, in Willard, Utah, to James Collin Wood and Emma Amelia Farrell Wood, he was the oldest of eight children. Brothers were Earl, Jim, Leigh Arthur, Joseph Carmen, Wynn, and sisters Elaine and Penny. He grew up in Howell, a small farming community in northern Utah. In 1930 he married Agnes Laney in the Salt Lake Temple. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, his children Lorene Williamsen Plumb, Santa Clara, UT, Marilyn (Jay) Richardson, Ivins, UT, Jane (Barry) Nelsen, South Jordan, UT, and Daryl (Sandra) Wood, Oak City, UT, 19 grandchildren, 48 great- grandchildren and twelve great-great grandchildren, his brother, Earl and sister, Penny Wood Reeder, and Jane Tabor, caregiver and friend. Woody fell in love with flying as a young boy and in 1935 began a long career, logging more that 30, 000 hours flying time. He worked primarily as an executive pilot and as a flight instructor for the Navy Reserve at Marana Airbase near Tucson, AZ. He also spent several years working for the Federal Aviation Association in small airports in the southwest. He continued his flight instruction, maintaining high standards for his students, until the age of 91. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, serving in the bishopric while living in Tucson. Memorial service will be Saturday, July 23, 2005 at 2:00 p.m., at the Myers Mortuary Chapel, 205 S. 100 E., Brigham City, followed by burial at the Willard Cemetery.
