Varsel Smith Jenks June 25, 1922-April 13, 2012 Age 89 Varsel Smith Jenks, a resident of Perry, Utah, died April 13, 2012, incident to age. Varsel was born June 25, 1922, in Gibson, Idaho, to Mable Smith and Asael Randall Jenks. He was raised throughout the Western United States as his father worked for the highway department. A graduate of Davis County High School, he was drafted into the Army during WWII and trained in radio and radar repair. He was later given an honorable medical discharge because of his hearing loss. He then served in the LDS Western States Mission (April 1946-April 1948). He married and was sealed to Minnie Warwood on Sept. 22, 1949, in the Salt Lake LDS temple. They raised 9 childrena"5 girls and 4 boys. He attended Brigham Young University and graduated from Utah State Agricultural College in 1952 with a degree in industrial education and a wood work minor. Varsel was a teacher. He taught at Dubois High School and then taught welding at Intermountain Indian School. During his teaching career, he taught every subject available except homemaking even though he was capable of teaching it too. After he retired, he worked in the Ogden LDS Temple for 14 years and served, with his wife, in two 18-month missions (Nov. 1985-May 1987 and Feb. 1988- June 1989) to the Brisbane, Australia mission, spending time in Warwick, Australia; Papua New Guinea; and Thursday Island. Varsel's other church service includes serving as a counselor in bishopric and finance secretary, each for 6 years, Seventies Quorum secretary for more than 15 years, and scout committee member for about 20 years. He was the handyman and mechanic of choice for his family and friends. He was a do-it-yourselfer, enjoying handiwork, especially woodworking and welding. He loved to travel with and/or to see his family. He is survived by his children: Arlana (Walt) Kneib, of Owasso, OK; Gaylin (Roe) Jenks of Perry, UT; Elaine (David) Salisbury of Manassas, VA; Ardell (Opal) Jenks of Perry, UT; LaVona (Brent) Comsa of Peoria, AZ; Weldon (Pam) Jenks of Nampa, ID; Norman Jenks of Seattle, WA; Marlyn (Roger) Didericksen of Spring, TX; Deanna (Harlan) Brewer, of Perry, UT, 39 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings: Vila Warner, Orem, UT; Alice Koch of Logan, UT; and David (Linda) Jenks of Silverton, OR. His wife, his parents, four brothers, and one grandson preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 21, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Three Mile Creek Chapel, 1290 W. 2950 S., Perry, Utah. Friends may call on Friday, April 20, 2012, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 205 S. 100 E., Brigham City and on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Three Mile Creek Chapel. Interment will be in the Logan Cemetery.
