Obituary for Velvet (Alaina Lee Barnard) Cope
It is with overwhelming sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Velvet (Alaina Lee Barnard) Cope, on September 16, 2026.
Velvet was born on February 18, 1946, in Ogden, Utah, to Homer Lee and Florance (Call) Barnard. She was lovingly raised by her aunt and uncle, Maurice and LaRee Fowers.
Velvet married Richard Cope on January 5, 1966, for time and all eternity in the Logan LDS Temple. Together, they had one daughter, Ralee Florence Cope Gomez.
Education & Career
Velvet attended Quincy Elementary (Quincy Girls) and Ogden High School. She went on to graduate from Weber State College with honors in Cosmetology.
For 20 years, Velvet owned and operated her own hair salon, Velvet's Hairstyling. She later worked alongside Donalee Ross at a different salon, completing an incredible career that spanned 50 years.
Hobbies & Passions
Velvet’s special talent was always having an eye for the beautiful things in life—especially doing her ladies' hair, collecting antiques, cooking (her Christmas candy being the most memorable, although chocolate was her favorite), gardening, restoring cars, and target shooting with her family. She once competed in a target shooting tournament and won first place in the Quick Draw category on her very first try. She would always say, "A little competition is good for everyone".
Throughout her life and the health struggles she endured, her sense of humor never failed, especially in her facial expressions. Mom, I hope you know I choose to dance!
