Verdon Richens Smith EDEN/CLINTON - Verdon Richens Smith, 69, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012 peacefully at her home in Clinton of natural causes. She was born June 14, 1943 in Myton, UT to William LeNar and Dena Cope Richens. She graduated from Valley School and Weber High School. She married Fredrick Kent Smith, April 24, 1963 in the Logan Utah Temple. Verdon then graduated from Superior Beauty College. Kent and Verdon operated five beauty shops and a beauty school where she was an instructor for over 15 years while raising a young family. Verdon was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served many callings: Primary President, Relief Society President, Young Women's Leader, Stake Youth Christmas Choir director, Ward Choir Director. She and Kent served at Temple Square on a Service Mission for 8 years, which was her favorite calling of all, because Verdon loved music. She taught both piano and voice lessons to many young people in Eden and enjoyed being a member and director of the "Valley Chordettes." Verdon loved to sew but was best known for her amazing crocheted rugs. Rugs of every color, size and shape for every season adorned her warm comfortable home in Eden. Verdon worked at both Snowbasin and Powder Mountain and was referred to as "Mom" by many young employees and skiers who enjoyed the sport. There was always an open spot on Verdon's living room floor where you could "crash" for the night to catch the fresh powder the next morning. She loved young people of every size, shape, color, origin and religion and was loved by them in return. She is survived by her husband, F. Kent Smith of Clinton; Traci L. Wixon (Michael) of Huntsville, UT: K. Travis Smith (Codi) of Ogden, UT; Tyson Oakey (Alan) of West Point, UT; Tynel Jarnigan (Adam)of Amherst, NH; and 11 talented grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Cecil Richens (Leona) of Fresno, CA; Howard Richens of Iona, ID; Melva Richens of Eden, UT/Mesa, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Verdon's name to Primary Children's Hospital, 100 North Mario Capecchi Drive, Salt Lake City, UT 84132. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 12 noon at Myers Mortuary, 5865 South 1900 West, Roy. A viewing will be held Tuesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. prior to services.
