Vern was a hard worker and spent his early years working on the family farm. He attended Davis High School, and following his military service, he attended Weber State College.

Vern was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings throughout his life. He loved the outdoors and spent as much time as he could camping, fishing and hiking.

He was called back into service during the Korean War. He worked at the Clearfield Naval Base, Thiokol, and he retired from Hill Air Force Base in 1973.

He lived his entire married life in Layton, Utah. After his wife passed, he resided in Ogden, Roy and Layton, finally spending his final time at the home of his daughter in Clinton. He was a devoted family man and set a wonderful example of laughter and unconditional love.
