Wallace A. Smith Obituary (1921 - 2003)

Wallace A. Smith Wallace Albert Smith, 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 5, 2003 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He died due to complications of Parkinson's Disease. He was born May 28, 1921 in Ogden, Utah, to Ira James and Aaltje "Lydia" Alberts Smith. He married Afton Lowe on September 5, 1945 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Wally was reared and educated in Ogden, graduating from Ogden High School in 1939. He attended Weber State College, Utah State University and University of Utah where he graduated with a B.S. Degree in Education. He taught in the Ogden City Schools for 29 years where he had a great influence on the lives of many students. He was known for his sense of humor and his unwavering kindness towards everyone he met. He was known at school as "Jolly Wally". He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was assigned to the Air Transport Command in the China, Burma, India Theatre, flying combat missions over the Himalayas. He was twice awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, as well as the Air Medal with Oak Leaf cluster. He was a member of the Canyon View 2nd Ward, where he was active as high priest. He has served in many positions including 1st counselor in the Bishopric, Sunday School Teacher, In-service Teacher, Genealogy Worker, Indian Placement Program Stake Director and Home Teacher. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Afton L. Smith; children, W. Dean and Joanne Smith, Bountiful; Carlene and Roger Blain, Clinton; Glenn L. and Tami Smith, Roy; Marilyn and Bill Streeper, West Point; Nadine and Kenneth Gygi, West Point; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Eva Coy, Ogden; and brother, Leland J. and Celia Smith, Ogden. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Ruby, Vera and Virgie; two brothers, Avon and Marvin; and one granddaughter, Jessica Carlene Smith.
