Dr. Wesley Grant Harline Obituary (1921 - 2009)

Dr. Wesley G. Harline Dr. Wesley G. Harline, 88, who died on August 19, 2009, was born September 1, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah of goodly parents, one of five sons and two daughters of Oscar J. Harline and Lorena LeCheminant Harline. He graduated from Granite High School in 1938 and was awarded a scholarship to the University of Utah in English and Journalism. He later transferred to the field of pre-medicine and attended the University of Utah Medical School. In 1943, he transferred to Temple University in Philadelphia, where in 1945 he graduated in the upper 10 percent of his class. Dr. Harline interned at King's County Hospital in New York City. During World War II, he was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Force as a Captain and spent four months at McCormick General Hospital in Pasadena, California, an orthopedic and plastic surgery hospital for injured armed-services veterans. He was transferred to the Army Officers School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and later to the Army Hospital at Boling Field in Washington, D.C. Following nine month's service he was transferred to the Air Force Hospital at Rapid City, South Dakota, a B29 base, where he was Chief of Surgery. After discharge from the Air Force, he served a three-and one-half-year residency in surgery through the auspices of the University of Utah Medical School. He was accepted for a two-year plastic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He married Rose Catherine (Candy) Candleana in 1947, a graduate of King's County Hospital School of Nursing. Dr. Wes and Mrs. Harline's three children are sons Wesley Grant (Lee) Harline, Jr., Eric Joseph (Rick) Harline, and daughter Toni Anne Harline Duffy. In 1953, he moved his family to Ogden, Utah and entered medical practice with his brother, Dr. Alden K. Harline, and Dr. Gilbert Moesinger, establishing the Weber Clinic. Dr. Wesley Harline had a wide range of referrals in the general surgical field and was highly respected as a competent surgeon. Hospital personnel enjoyed scrubbing with him because of his expertise, and floor nurses enjoyed caring for his patients because so few had complications. A former staff surgeon at St. Benedicts Hospital and McKay-Dee Hospital, Dr. Harline was a member of the American Medical Association, the Utah State Medical Society, the Weber County Medical Society, and the Ogden Surgical Society, of which he was secretary for five years and president for one term. He was a former member of the Utah State Board of Health and the House of Delegates of the Utah State Medical Society. He was Chairman of their Political Action and Legislative Committee and was a member of the Surgical Executive Committee. In 1969 and 1970, Dr. Harline was a member of the Ogden City Council and worked to lower taxes, broaden cooperation between the municipalities of the area, created a parks and recreation master plan, promoted the development of Skyline Dr., the beautification of downtown Ogden, and worked to attract business to the community and improve the infrastructure. The last twenty-five years of his practice were devoted to cosmetic surgery; his patients came from all over the nation and abroad. He was in the forefront of the developing field of cosmetic surgery, traveling to conferences and seminars several times a year to stay current in his specialty, and participating as a panel expert. He had his own cosmetic surgical center with operating rooms and accommodations and a caring medical staff for post-op care of his patients. He did four or five cosmetic surgical operations six days a week with the assistance of a well-trained surgical staff. Dr. Harline was a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, the American Society of Breast Surgery, the American Society of Liposuction Surgery, the International Society of Cosmetic Surgery, the American Academy of Aesthetic and Restorative Surgery, and the International Society of Cosmetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He retired at age 79 after over fifty years of medical practice. Dr. Harline is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a former Elder's Quorum President, was at the time of his death a member of the High Priest Quorum, and was active in home teaching. Dr. Harline was preceded in death by his father Oscar Harline, his mother Lorena LeCheminant Harline, brothers Glenden Harline, Dr. Alden K. Harline, Dr. Osmond L. Harline, and a sister, Dawn-Etta Harline Daley. Dr. Wesley G. Harline's children have established a scholarship in his name in the University of Utah Medical School. He is survived by his brother, Richard D. (Mary Lou) Harline, his sister Jo-An (Gary) Lyman, and his children: Wesley Grant (Michelle) Harline, Eric Joseph (Cathy) Harline, and Toni Anne (Greg) Duffy. Also surviving are grandchildren Erica Harline (daughter of Rick and former wife, Donna), Katie and Haley Duffy, and twenty nieces and nephews. Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 Saturday August 29, 2009, Rushton Heights LDS Ward, interment previously at Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch. In lieu of flowers family is requesting donations be made to the Dr. Wesley G.
